Privacy Policy

Kitsiso is designed to support livestock management, animal health, traceability, farm decision-support and access to relevant services. This policy explains how information may be collected, used, stored and shared when you use Kitsiso.

Important: Kitsiso provides livestock-management and decision-support functionality. It does not replace a veterinarian, the Department of Veterinary Services, Botswana Meat Commission, or any other competent authority. Privacy and advertising choices available in the app should be used together with your device-level permissions and Google consent controls where applicable.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the Kitsiso mobile application, its related web pages, and supporting backend services used to provide Kitsiso features. It describes the types of information that may be processed, why that information is used, and the choices available to users.

Kitsiso is intended primarily for livestock owners, farmers, farm workers, livestock professionals and other users managing animal and farm information.

2. Information we may handle

The information processed by Kitsiso depends on the features you choose to use. It may include:

Account and profile information Names or identifiers, contact details, login information and preferences associated with your Kitsiso account.
Farm information Farm names, farm locations, GPS coordinates, primary-farm selection and other information you record about a farming operation.
Livestock records Animal identifiers, herd details, lifecycle events, movement history, breeding information, weight records and other livestock-management data.
Animal-health information Symptoms, observations, photographs, care records, veterinary notes, referral information and other records you choose to save about animals.
Device and technical information Device type, operating-system information, network information, crash or diagnostic data, advertising identifiers and similar technical data when required by enabled services.
Voice and microphone input Speech input may be processed when you actively use voice-assistance features. Kitsiso does not operate an always-listening wake word.

Kitsiso is designed so that some data can remain on the device for offline-first use. Other information may be transmitted to supporting services when a connected feature is used.

3. How we use information

Information may be used to:

  • provide and maintain Kitsiso features;
  • identify farms, herds and animals recorded by the user;
  • support animal-health history and livestock lifecycle records;
  • calculate farm or disease proximity where relevant;
  • provide weather, veterinary-service and market-readiness functionality;
  • support traceability, breeding, reproduction and care reminders;
  • provide user-requested voice interactions;
  • protect the service, troubleshoot technical problems and improve reliability;
  • show advertising to eligible Free-tier users where consent and applicable law allow it; and
  • comply with applicable legal, regulatory and legitimate security requirements.

4. Location and device permissions

Certain Kitsiso features may request device permissions such as location, camera, photos or microphone access. Permissions are requested for specific functionality and can generally be changed from your device settings.

Location

Farm coordinates may be used for features such as Primary Farm, local weather, reported disease proximity and nearby veterinary-service discovery. Where precise location is requested, the purpose should be disclosed at or before the point of collection.

Camera and photos

Images may be selected or captured when you choose to attach animal photos, health observations, documents or other records.

Microphone

Microphone access is used only when you activate voice assistance. Device speech-recognition and text-to-speech services may have their own privacy practices.

5. Animal-health information

Health-related information stored in Kitsiso concerns livestock and animals, but associated farmer or account information may still constitute personal data. Kitsiso therefore treats animal-health workflows carefully and does not use health-assessment, urgent disease, veterinary-referral or similar high-sensitivity screens as advertising placements.

6. AI and decision-support

Some Kitsiso features may use artificial-intelligence or automated decision-support services to assist with tasks such as interpreting user-entered symptoms or extracting structured information. These features are intended to assist users, not to provide a definitive diagnosis, prescribe medication or replace a qualified veterinarian.

Where an external AI service is used, only information reasonably necessary for the requested feature should be transmitted. Users should avoid entering unrelated personal information into animal-health prompts or uploads.

7. Advertising, Google AdMob and consent

Kitsiso may display advertising to users of the Free tier. Paid tiers are intended to be ad-free.

Kitsiso uses or may use Google Mobile Ads / Google AdMob to request and display advertisements. As part of ad delivery, Google and participating advertising partners may process information such as device identifiers, IP address, general device information, advertising-consent status and other data used for ad delivery, measurement, fraud prevention and, where permitted, personalization.

Advertising is not placed on symptom or health-assessment results, urgent disease information, veterinary-referral screens, privacy/consent screens, or payment/checkout screens.

European regulations and Google consent

Where required, Kitsiso uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) or equivalent Google consent controls before requesting ads. Depending on your location and applicable law, you may be offered choices such as consenting, refusing consent, or managing advertising options.

Privacy and cookie settings

Where Google advertising privacy choices are available, reopen them from Kitsiso → Settings → Privacy & Data → Advertising privacy choices. You can also manage certain advertising and device permissions through your device settings.

8. External service providers

Kitsiso may rely on external service providers for features such as hosting, maps/location services, weather data, veterinary-service discovery, speech services, AI decision-support and advertising. Examples may include:

Each third-party provider may process data under its own terms and privacy policy. Kitsiso seeks to limit sharing to what is reasonably necessary for the feature being used.

9. Storage, offline use and retention

Kitsiso uses an offline-first approach for a number of livestock-management features. This means some records may be stored locally on your device and remain available without a network connection.

Connected functionality may also store or process information on remote infrastructure. Information should be retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, to maintain user records, provide requested functionality, satisfy legitimate operational needs or comply with applicable legal obligations.

Uninstalling the application may remove locally stored application data from the device, but it may not automatically delete information previously stored by connected services or backups.

10. Security

Reasonable technical and organisational safeguards are used or intended to protect Kitsiso information against unauthorised access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure. No application, storage system or network transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Users are responsible for protecting their device, account credentials and access to any livestock or farm information stored under their account.

11. Your privacy rights

Subject to applicable law and the circumstances of the processing, you may have rights concerning your personal data, including rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or to object to certain processing.

Botswana's Data Protection Act, 2024 regulates the protection of personal data and the privacy of individuals. The Act commenced on 14 January 2025. Rights and obligations may be subject to statutory conditions, exemptions and procedures.

12. Children

Kitsiso is designed as a livestock and farm-management tool and is not directed primarily at children. Users who are not legally able to provide valid consent in their jurisdiction should use the service only with the involvement of an appropriate parent, guardian or authorised adult.

13. International processing and service providers

Some technology providers used by Kitsiso may operate infrastructure or process data outside Botswana. Where cross-border processing occurs, Kitsiso should use appropriate contractual, technical and organisational measures as required by applicable law.

14. Changes to this Privacy Policy

This policy may be updated as Kitsiso develops, new integrations are added, or legal and regulatory requirements change. Material updates should be reflected by changing the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, by providing an in-app notice.
